School-based exam bids adieu on high note

With the Class X CBSE 2017 results declared on Saturday has closed the debate on which is better, school-based examination or board-based examination. The HRD ministry has scrapped school-based examination from this year due to rise in the pass percentages in the board.

This year again students Ajmet region have preferred board-based examination rather than school-based examination. About 1,02,148 students had appeared in board-based examination while 76,575 in school-based examination. The pass percentage is 89.77% and 98.25%, respectively. The difference of 8.48% pass percentage indicates that scoring in board-based examination is not easy as in school-based examination.
Utsah Seth, student, Rukhmani Birla Modern High school, who scored 10 CGPA feels that school-based examination allows teachers to evaluate them for the whole year. "While board exam you always have an element of pressure to perform in the exams. The pressure often creates stress which keeps the performance down," said Seth.

The fear of board-based examination is such that since the optional scheme was introduced many school had no student appeared in the board examination. TOI spoke to students and parents who have appeared in both school-based and board-based examination. The majority feels that school-based examination should not be scrapped as those wanted to appear in the board can appear in the optional system.

Sudhanshu Singh who son scored 8.9 CGPA feels in board based exam feels that his son could have scored 10 CGPA. "My son got only one chance to prove his mettle while those appeared in the school based had several chances to score and to improvise on their scores," said Singh. The major difference between the two is upcoming system has answersheets evaluated by the external evaluators, while in the outgoing answersheets get evaluated by school teachers of the same school.

While school principals feel that board exam has no space for continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) which prove to me more stressful for students. "By the time students reaches in class 10 they become habitual of CCE pattern. The CCE is required for the exploring the creative endeavors of students," said a school principal.
