IIT JEE Main 2017 Information

About JEE Main and JEE Advanced

Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an all India common engineering entrance examination which is conducted for admission in various engineering colleges and courses all over the country. It is regarded internationally as one of the most challenging engineering admission tests. The JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) is a two phase examination JEE Main JEE Advanced.

Student Image

Both JEE Main and JEE Advanced is conducted by CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) Board. The participating colleges in JEE Mains are NIT, IIIT and other institutions who offer UG engineering/architecture programs whereas prestigious institute like IIT offer these courses through JEE Advanced exam. The students are shortlisted for JEE Advanced examination through their performance in JEE Main as well as marks of Class 12th Board or equivalent exam.

There are some institutes like the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, and the Indian Institute of Science which use the score obtained in JEE Advanced as the basis for admission. These are not participating institutes of central IIT JEE Advanced counselling of which all IITs are member. Any student who takes admission to IITs cannot appear for JEE-Advanced exam in the next year, but the same is not the case with IISc, IISER, RGIPT and other institutes as these institutes only use JEE Advanced score for admission.

What is JEE Main ?

JEE Main exam has two papers, Paper-1 and Paper-2. Candidates may opt for either or both of them. Both papers contain multiple choice questions. Paper 1 is for admission to B.E./B.Tech courses. It is conducted both online and offline. Paper-2 is for admission in B.Arch and B.Planning courses. It is conducted offline only.

An important change related to 12th board percentage has been introduced in JEE Main 2017. The weightage of 12th board percentage will not be considered for calculating JEE Main score from 2017 onwards.

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for JEE Main 2016, like every year, depends on 3 factors: Age criteria, Year of appearing for 12th standard exam or equivalent and number of attempts made for JEE.

Criteria based on Date of Birth:

  • Students who are born on or after October 1, 1992 are eligible to apply.
  • Candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Persons with Disabilities (PwD), should have been born on or after October 1, 1987. Candidates of these categories have been given a relaxation of 5 years.
  • Date of birth will be considered as per the Secondary Education Board/University certificate.

Criteria based on Class 12th exam:

  • Aspirants should have passed 12th class or qualifying exam in 2015 or 2016.
  • Students, who are appearing in class 12th or qualifying exam in 2017 can also apply.

Criteria based on Total Attempts:

A JEE Main aspirant can avail 3 attempts for the national level undergraduate engineering entrance exam.

JEE Main 2017 State Code of Eligibility Criteria:

JEE Main 2017 State Code of Eligibility refers to code of the state from where a candidate has passed class 12th/equivalent qualifying exam by virtue of which he/she becomes eligible to appear in JEE Main 2017. For Example, if a candidate has passed class 12th/equivalent qualifying examination from a particular state but appeared for improvement from a different state, then in this case, his/her state code of eligibility will be the one from where he/she has originally passed 12th class/equivalent qualifying exam. In such case, the candidate's JEE Main 2017 state code of eligibility can't be the state from where he/she has appeared for improvement.

How to Qualify through JEE Main exam?

JEE Main 2017 All India Ranks will not be calculated with score of class 12th marks now. CBSE has decided to do away with class 12th marks, which were used to calculate the All India Ranks of JEE Main till 2016. All India Ranks of JEE Main would earlier get calculated with JEE Main score and normalized marks of class 12th in the ration 60:40.

Top 2,20,000 examinees from JEE Main will be eligible to sit for JEE Advanced 2017. In 2016, the total number of eligible candidates for JEE Advanced was increased to 2 lakhs from 1.5 lakhs in 2015.
