IIT JEE Main 2018 Information

About JEE Main and JEE Advanced

Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an all India common engineering entrance examination which is conducted for admission in various engineering colleges and courses all over the country. It is regarded internationally as one of the most challenging engineering admission tests. The JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) is a two phase examination JEE Main JEE Advanced.

Student Image

Both JEE Main and JEE Advanced is conducted by CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) Board. The participating colleges in JEE Mains are NIT, IIIT and other institutions who offer UG engineering/architecture programs whereas prestigious institute like IIT offer these courses through JEE Advanced exam. The students are shortlisted for JEE Advanced examination through their performance in JEE Main as well as marks of Class 12th Board or equivalent exam.

There are some institutes like the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, and the Indian Institute of Science which use the score obtained in JEE Advanced as the basis for admission. These are not participating institutes of central IIT JEE Advanced counselling of which all IITs are member. Any student who takes admission to IITs cannot appear for JEE-Advanced exam in the next year, but the same is not the case with IISc, IISER, RGIPT and other institutes as these institutes only use JEE Advanced score for admission.

What is JEE Main ?

JEE Main exam has two papers, Paper-1 and Paper-2. Candidates may opt for either or both of them. Both papers contain multiple choice questions. Paper 1 is for admission to B.E./B.Tech courses. It is conducted both online and offline. Paper-2 is for admission in B.Arch and B.Planning courses. It is conducted offline only.

JEE Mains, unlike JEE Advanced, has a fixed exam structure and is not subject to change every year. Paper-1 is of three hours duration and consists of thirty multiple-choice (single-correct) questions in each of the three subjects (physics, chemistry and maths). There is negative marking for incorrect answers. 4 marks are awarded for correct answers and 1 mark is deducted for incorrect answers.

From 2013 to 2016, the marks obtained in the class XII school board examination used to be accorded a 40% weightage in deciding the JEE Mains all India ranks.

From 2017, CBSE made Aadhar card mandatory for students applying for JEE. Students not having the card were asked to register for it before applying for JEE.

From 2018 onward, the government will introduce a separate agency to manage the examinations (JEE Main 2018). This new agency will be named as National Testing Services (NTS). The current examination conducting body i.e. CBSE will be removed and NTS will be entitled to conduct all the examinations.

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria

The Joint Entrance Exam or JEE is a common entrance exam conducted at all India level to facilitate students for getting admissions into different engineering colleges of India. JEE ranks among the toughest exams in the world and every year over 1.5 million students appear for this exam.

Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) is conducted in two phases. Many students appear for this test every year to get admissions into NITs, IITs, IIITs and other government funded technical institutes. The courses offered by these institutes are B.Tech/B.E, B.Arch, Integrated MSc’s, etc.

Before you plan to take the assessment, there are few eligibility criteria which a candidate must fulfill to appear for JEE Mains 2018.

Criteria based on Date of Birth:

  • Students (General and OBC) who are born on or after October 1, 1993 are eligible to apply for JEE Mains 2018.
  • Candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Persons with Disabilities (PwD), should have been born on or after October 1, 1988. Candidates of these categories have been given a relaxation of 5 years.

Criteria based on Class 12th exam:

  • Aspirants should have passed 12th class or qualifying exam in 2016 or 2017.
  • Students, who are appearing in class 12th or qualifying exam in 2018 can also apply.

Criteria based on Total Attempts:

A JEE Main aspirant can avail 3 attempts for the national level undergraduate engineering entrance exam.

JEE Main 2017 State Code of Eligibility Criteria:

JEE Main 2017 State Code of Eligibility refers to code of the state from where a candidate has passed class 12th/equivalent qualifying exam by virtue of which he/she becomes eligible to appear in JEE Main 2017. For Example, if a candidate has passed class 12th/equivalent qualifying examination from a particular state but appeared for improvement from a different state, then in this case, his/her state code of eligibility will be the one from where he/she has originally passed 12th class/equivalent qualifying exam. In such case, the candidate's JEE Main 2017 state code of eligibility can't be the state from where he/she has appeared for improvement.

How to Qualify through JEE Main exam?

JEE Main 2017 All India Ranks will not be calculated with score of class 12th marks now. CBSE has decided to do away with class 12th marks, which were used to calculate the All India Ranks of JEE Main till 2016. All India Ranks of JEE Main would earlier get calculated with JEE Main score and normalized marks of class 12th in the ration 60:40.

Top 2,20,000 examinees from JEE Main will be eligible to sit for JEE Advanced 2017. In 2016, the total number of eligible candidates for JEE Advanced was increased to 2 lakhs from 1.5 lakhs in 2015.
