The AIIMS MBBS 2017 Entrance Exam was conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi on May 28 at more than 160 centres across India. Held in the form of a Computer Based Test (CBT), AIIMS MBBS 2017 will offer admissions to 707 MBBS seats across 7 AIIMS institutions in the country. More than 1.5 lakh candidates are expected to have appeared for the national level medical entrance exam which was held in two shifts, with the morning one being held between 9.00 pm and 12.30 pm and the forenoon one being held between 3 pm and 6.30 pm. 200 questions were asked from 4 sections, namely Physics, Chemistry, Biology and General Knowledge and Reasoning. Candidates were to be allotted one mark for every correct answer and deducted one-third mark for every incorrect answer.
The initial reactions received from students from both slots is that the AIIMS 2017 MBBS paper was of a much higher difficulty level than previous years’ papers. Most students agreed that Physics was the toughest section closely followed by Chemistry. “99% of the questions in Physics were calculative in nature, which made the section time consuming. Other sections were relatively easy. I think I can score 120+ marks,” said Abnish Bhadoria, a NEET 2017 candidate. Jhanvi Shah also said she found Physics the toughest while for Nidhi Singh, Physics and Reasoning were the most time-consuming sections. Many of the students in Physics were around Electricity and Magnetism, the students shared.
For Mohammed Imran, Physics was of a very high difficulty level but he found Biology and Chemistry to be of the same standard as that of the NEET 2017 paper. Mayank Jha shared that many questions were from the question papers of previous years’ AIIMS MBBS and JIPMER and students familiar with those questions wouldn’t have been as stressed.
Many students felt Biology was undoubtedly the easiest while Chemistry was of a moderate level. As per Rahul Krishna, “In order of difficulty, Physics was undoubtedly the toughest. It was of a much more advanced level than any of us expected. The questions were quite lengthy and time-consuming.”
As per comments from coaching experts, Physics and Chemistry were undoubtedly tougher but students could score in General Knowledge if they were familiar with current affairs. “There were both numerical and theoretical questions asked as part of the Physics paper which made it tricky for candidates to finish their desired questions within the allotted time. AIIMS MBBS 2016 paper was much easier as per the feedback my students have given me,” said Aman Kumar. Another coaching expert shared, “The GK section would be easier for candidates up-to-date with latest national and international events including people who made the news recently and various important schemes launched by the Centre off late. For example there were questions asked about the BHIM app and the URJA app ”
Many candidates were also hampered by technical glitches they encountered in the morning shift. According to them, there was one question in Physics and another in Chemistry which wasn’t displayed with the screen only showing a ‘Font Not Supported’ error. They hope that these questions will be not counted and bonus marks will be awarded by AIIMS for the same.
There were also instances of aspirants taking to social media to complain about difficulties faced with regard to the logistics of the exam. As per Manish Bhardwaj, candidates in the evening slot weren’t let out of the exam centre until 7.00 pm despite the exam being concluded at 6.30 pm as per the AIIMS MBBS schedule. Pratima Kumari shared that students had to face problems at many different centres because of incomplete lists of candidates being provided to those centres. Many students were also stressed as they had been unable to check the CBSE Class 12 Result released on the same day.
AIIMS 2017, like the preceding versions of the exam, will also use a normalization procedue to determine cut-off corresponding percentiles taking both the morning and evening slots into account. As per officials, if the percentiles for both shifts turn out ot be unequal, then the lower of the two will be the eligible category-wise cut-off. The Merit List for AIIMS MBBS 2017 wil be prepared by the examination authority AIIMS New Delhi as per the marks secured by candidates in their respective categories in the exam. Only those candidates who clear the category wise cut offs will be eligible for a place in the AIIMS MBBS Merit List.
The AIIMS MBBS 2017 Result will be declared on June 14.
