The
Class 12th Mathematics or Math board examination was concluded by the Central Board of Secondary Examination, CBSE a little while ago. The paper has long been one of the most controversial subjects due to its varying levels of difficulty. As students and teachers left the examination centers, the difference in opinions was evident. Teachers and experts who went through the paper called it balanced, suggesting that it was very easy for students and was mostly from NCERT. As for the students, the fact could not be farther from that. Many students pointed out to questions worth 16 marks that were extremely tricky and for some absolutely unsolvable. Starting off with the teachers who have gone through the paper. As per the teachers, the question paper was balanced. A teacher pointed out that students who have only covered NCERT would be able to attempt the paper of 60 marks and above. As for the questions that were difficult the other teacher noted that there were a few questions with higher levels of difficulty but that was again very much expected.
“You cannot have a mathematics examination like a language examination. It is all about concept and the implementation of that concept at different levels. So, it is almost irrational to expect an ‘easy’ mathematics examination,” said an expert. Another agreed and noted that the questions that were a bit ‘tricky’ were just so as they were at a difficulty level higher than moderate. One question in particular, noted another expert, was particularly tough and would have most students confused.
“CBSE and in fact every board must find middle ground for setting up question papers. And this mathematics paper does just that. It would test a student on his understanding of the subject at a basic, intermediate and advance level,” quotes another expert with over 20 years of experience teaching the subject for higher secondary and competitive examination. As for the students, however, it was not all that simple.
“This is not a competitive examination. We are all in it as equals but the question paper is more for science stream students than commerce stream!” noted a student who was clearly angry at the math question paper. Another students agreed with his friend and said the ‘paper was just weird in the end.’ Though not all were unhappy. A student at another exam center in Noida pointed out, “It was very easy and I am happy with my paper. I am looking at scoring above 70 very easily in the examination
Teachers and experts concur that mathematics can never be truly called easy. However, from the point of view of the result, the examination couldn’t be simpler. “Comparing it to Physics and Chemistry and even Accountancy examinations, Math paper was easy and from NCERT. Students cannot ask for any easier paper,” stated another teacher before he got back to the eager students who were busy analyzing the paper.
