The JEE Main and and NEET 2020 tests are unlikely to be held before second or third week of June with the nationwide lockdown in the wake of Covid-19 spread extended till May 3, 2020.
A day after PM Narendra Modi announced extension of the lockdown, sources in the ministry of human resource development said the National Testing Agency (NTA) may be able to conduct the entrance tests for engineering/ architecture and medical courses only by second or third week of June as school education Boards will also have to first hold the pending papers.
Following extension of the lockdown, NTA has also further extended the dates of online correction of application forms, which include change of city and centre, till May 3.
A senior NTA official denied rumours that the entrance exams would be held in July. According to a senior NTA official, no such decisions has been taken. “There are no dates being announced and candidates should only rely on official notification uploaded on the NTA website or issued by the MHRD. Under the present circumstances, there is no way one can predict a date for the exams,” confirmed the official.
A senior official at MHRD said a decision on the dates by CBSE and NTA can be taken only after the lockdown is lifted across the country. “NTA will also take into the account the schedule of the pending Class X and XII Board exams of various school education boards ... Therefore, even if the lockdown is lifted by May 3, JEE (Main) and NEET-UG can be conducted only in the latter half of June at the earliest,” he said.
Ministry officials said a comprehensive assessment of the situation can be made only after complete lifting of the restrictions.
